Unwavering Focus

Mary: Unwavering Focus - Godly Devotion
Focal Passage: Luke 10:38-42; John 11:28-33; 12;1-8
Biblical Truth: We are to put Jesus first in our lives.

HOW?
   By Listening to Him
   Giving Him Our Best
Having Greater Concern for His Approval Than That of Others

When it comes to your daily activities, are you.
A religious person doing religious things? or A godly person doing godly things?

Luke 10:38-42
Martha was distracted by many tasks. Martha was focused on many things.  Mary was focused on one thing; sitting at Jesus' feet listening to Him.  In vs. 39 it says she"heard his word" - Heard - Greek imperfect tense indicating continuous action - Kept hearing or kept listening to Jesus' word.

Listening is not a great skill for most of us. It's much easier to talk sometimes than it is to listen. We do that even in our prayer lives. We go to God in prayer and do all the talking and then get up and leave before we listen to God.

Who has time to sit - much less sit at the feet of Jesus?

Why was Martha upset with Mary?
Not helping her in the kitchen, with the meal, all the hospitality stuff. After all she was serving Jesus.

How did Jesus respond to Martha?

Why did Jesus say Mary's choice was the right one?
Martha's serving the Lord got in the way of spending time with the Lord. She couldn't listen to Him because she had so much to do for Him. She missed an opportunity to hear Jesus' words.

Serving a meal for Jesus was a good thing, but listening to Him was even better.
Feeding one's body is good, but feeding one's soul is best.
Mary had chosen the best thing. She had chosen to focus on what mattered most.

At His feet, we discover who He wants us to call or write that day.
At His feet, we learn how to best invest our money and our time.
At His feet, we find out all that He wants us to know and do.

But if we don't have time at His feet, we are pretty much guessing our way through the day.

Many people excuse their absence from worship or Sunday School by saying they are too busy. We are not keeping our focus on Jesus if we are too busy to spend time in study of His word and in worship.

Keith Green Quote
"If your heart takes more pleasure in reading novels, or watching TV, or going to the movies, or talking to friends, rather than just sitting alone with God and embracing Him, sharing His cares and His burdens, weeping and rejoicing with Him, then how are you going to handle forever and ever in His presence? You'd be bored to tears in heaven if you're not ecstatic about God now."

How devoted are you to growing in godliness?

What does it mean to make Jesus your priority?

Which one can you best relate to? Which is good, better, best?
Martha
Mary
A combination of the two

In the next set of Scriptures, Mary & Martha's Brother Lazarus has died. Jesus did not hurry coming to Lazarus when He heard he had a fatal illness. It was common Jewish thought that the soul would linger around a corpse for up to three days after death. It seemed plausible during those three days that someone might be revived. (It would be a miracle but since they believed the soul was still lingering it might be possible.) Yet Jesus waited for four days to return. The "window of opportunity" would have passed since the Jews believed that the soul was no longer present.

John 11:20-27 - Martha's encounter with Jesus.

John 11:28-33 - Mary's encounter with Jesus.

We discussed the differences and similarities and Jesus response to both.
Again Mary fell at Jesus' feet and poured out her heart to Him.

Which of these take most of your focus and attention on a normal day?
On a scale of 1-6 with "1" being the thing you give your greatest focus to:
_______Your family/friends
_______Your job/career
_______Your health/exercise/diet/fitness
_______Your Church/activities/people/involvement
_______Your hobbies/sports/shopping/internet
_______Jesus-time with Him/relationship with Him

Believers keep their focus on Jesus when we make listening to Him our priority.

We will conclude this lesson next week and talk about a godly man!!!
