The theme for January is “Things That Really Matter”. Many people are confused about what really matters in life and what brings true happiness. This month we will study about five things that really matter.
Focal Passages: Genesis 1:26-28, 31 2:15
Proverbs 6:6-8 21:5
Colossians 3:22- 4:1
Is working something to endure or is it enjoyable to you? Is work a punishment for sin or was it part of God’s plan from the beginning? In Genesis we discover that work was an assignment from God before man ever sinned. God put Adam in the garden to watch over it and take care of it. One of the punishments for sin was the “painful labor” of work.
Proverbs 6 compares the work ethic of the ant to humanity. The ant prepares for winter in spite of having no boss or “administrator” to tell him what to do. Do you work harder when the boss is around? We are to be diligent all the time, not just when we know we are being watched. Besides, God is watching all the time.
Psalm 127:1-2 basically says apart from the Lord, our most strenuous efforts are all in vain (deceptive). We are deceiving ourselves when we trust in our own efforts to make our future secure. Keep work in the proper perspective. Which way do you tend to swing? Do you work too much, thus ignoring family responsibilities or do you not take your work seriously enough?
Colossians 3:22-4:1 says to work wholeheartedly as unto the Lord. Work to please Him. Everything we do should honor the Lord.
Are there some work habits in your life that need changing in order to honor God more completely?
